Eli Broad was one of the most influential collectors and civic builders in Los Angeles, and the museum reflects his and Edythe Broad's taste for big, bold, era-defining art. The collection is also a lending library: the Broad Art Foundation has lent works to museums around the world for decades. The building's design — the veil filtering daylight into the top-floor galleries, and the vault below where the collection is stored and partly visible through windows on the stairway — makes the storage itself part of the show. The collection runs to nearly 2,000 works by more than 200 artists, so installations rotate and repeat visitors usually find something new.

The visit craft: reserve a free timed ticket ahead if you can, and book the Infinity Mirrored Room as soon as reservations open; if you miss it, check for same-day releases. Ride the escalator to the third floor, walk the main galleries, then take the stairs down past the vault windows. Plan an hour to ninety minutes. Afterward, walk across Grand Avenue to the Disney Concert Hall garden, or down the hill to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Kids tend to love Robert Therrien's Under the Table, a giant table and chairs you can walk beneath, and the mirror-bright shine of Jeff Koons's sculptures.

Practicals and fit: 221 South Grand Avenue on Bunker Hill, closed Mondays, with a paid garage beneath the museum. Because Hope Street is closed during expansion construction, garage visitors should arrive via Grand Avenue. Metro's Historic Broadway and Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill stations are close by. It pairs with the Getty Center for a two-sided Los Angeles art weekend: free contemporary downtown, free classics on the hill. The expansion itself, again by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, broke ground in April 2025 and will add about 55,000 square feet, including roughly 70 percent more gallery space, outdoor space and a publicly visible art-storage facility; it is expected to open in 2028, ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Broad free?

Yes — general admission is always free, though some special exhibitions and events have a separate charge. The Museum of Contemporary Art's Grand Avenue building is directly across the street, so a two-museum afternoon takes little planning.

Do I need a reservation?

Timed reservations are recommended and walk-ups are available daily; extra same-day tickets are released online.

How do I see the Infinity Mirrored Room?

The Kusama room requires an advance reservation — book as early as possible, as slots go quickly. It is a short, timed experience inside a mirrored chamber of hanging lights, and if you miss out, check for same-day releases.

Is there construction?

Yes — an expansion is underway. Hope Street is closed near the museum and the pedestrian bridge over Hope is closed, so follow posted signs and enter the garage from Grand Avenue. The new building is scheduled to open in 2028, so expect construction around the site until then.

When is The Broad closed?

Mondays, plus Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Opening hours vary by day, with a later Thursday evening, so check the calendar before you go.
